Agentic AI is a sophisticated AI system that can operate independently with minimum human intervention. Characteristics that make agentic AI unique from general purpose agents and automated systems are its capability to plan, make decisions, take action, and learn and adapt changes, which is as close to the human mind working on any task.
Let’s understand one prevalent scenario from IT operations support in enterprise architecture. In typical enterprise production operations, what does the enterprise support team do? Monitor jobs: if a specific job workflow fails on production, the job scheduler re-try running if configured to do so and may keep attempting until it reaches the limit specified in the configuration setting, or the support team investigates and manually kicks it off. In the first case, when the job tries to re-run after failure, it follows a pre-defined step. This scheduler job is not analyzing what made it fail, what it should adjust or look for next time to avoid this failure, and before re-trying, making decisions based on knowledge of the environment if now ready for this job to succeed. Aren’t these cognitive processes carried out by the human brain or, in this example, by support teams?
But what if a machine or system can mimic a similar process? Here, agentic AI comes into the picture. Agentic AI is a more advanced category of artificial intelligence systems designed to act autonomously.
These systems require minimum human intervention to execute tasks. A place where agentic AI systems stand out is their ability to anticipate future scenarios, evaluate potential outcomes, and adjust their strategies accordingly. They can assess various options and make informed decisions based various knowledge resources and real rime data.
A more real-world example is self-driving cars. The role of the human driver is played by the “car” itself, and its goal is to take you to the place where you want to go. Just like a human driver, it checks maps to locate and plan various options to reach, decides on the optimal path, looks out for possible road conditions and traffic while driving, changes the course of action based on those situations, and takes you to the destination. This is agentic AI that can play a human-like role in your life.
